Contraception Effectiveness
Some methods of contraception are more effective than others.
Contraception is less effective if not used correctly all the time.
Incorrect use (also called typical use) includes things like missing a pill, a condom coming off during sex or forgetting to replace a vaginal ring.
This page lists the methods in order of how well they work if used correctly all the time, starting with the most effective first.
As you can see the most effective methods of contraception are Long Acting Contraceptive methods (commonly known as LARCS) such as the implant, coil or injection.
For more information about contraceptive methods visit the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/contraception/methods-of-contraception/
Who can fit or offer a LARC (Long Acting Contraception) at Portcullis Surgery?
At Portcullis we have now 3 clinicians ( Dr Catherine Beanland, Dr Jenny Hartley and Dr Sally Wood) who can fit implants and 2 clinicians ( Dr Beanland and Dr Wood) who can fit coils. Dr Beanland is also a trainer for contraceptive methods and often has Trainee Doctors present in her clinics.
