Dr Phil Bates

Phil joined SW Shropshire PCN as a Clinical Pharmacist in February 2021 and works Monday to Friday across the 6 practices in the network.

He is available for appointments on Fridays to help patients with medication reviews.

Prior to joining the network, Phil was a care home pharmacist with the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital while completing the Medicines Optimisation in Care Homes Pathway and Independent Prescribing with Manchester University.

Phil has a pharmacy degree and PhD from Cardiff University and researched into respiratory disease at the University of Southampton and the Mayo Clinic. He studied Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has many years of experience as a community pharmacist.

His current roles and interests within the PCN include the review of care home residents for safe and appropriate medication as well as supporting the Covid-19 vaccination programme for the PCN.

Phil has a clinical interest and experience in asthma and COPD, medication safety in the frail and elderly patient and reviewing complex polypharmacy.

Mrs Julie Bates

Julie is a registered Pharmacy Technician and work for South West Shropshire Primary Care Network.

She is available for appointments on Fridays.

She has worked for many years in community pharmacy and qualified with the NPA with distinction as an Pharmacy Technician, and shortly after qualified as an Accuracy Checking Technician. Her roles in community pharmacy included Cluster Manager for five branches.

For the past two and half years she worked on the wards in a community hospital as part of Shropshire Community Health Trust Medicines Management team.  This role enabled her to assist patients with their medication needs and ensure patient safety during their hospital stay and when preparing for discharge.

My main aim within the PCN is to reach out to the housebound, frail and elderly patients who cannot visit our surgeries to help them with their medication needs.

She has an interests in allergies and asthma and is keen to get involved with the environmental impact of inhalers.

She is also available for housebound visits with patients to aid medication compliance and ensure patient safety.

She is happy to support recently discharged patients from hospital with a review of their medication
